Clachan cottage

Clachan Cottage is located on a private,  600-acre farm, within walking distance of the village of Stow, in the heart of the Scottish Borders. The cottage has lots of privacy and looks out over a small burn, hills and fields. It is extremely quiet and peaceful but is a ¼ mile walk to Stow, with a post office and old-fashioned grocery store, and bus service to Edinburgh, only 25 miles away. There are even chickens and ducks to feed, if you wish to indulge them!

The cottage has three bedrooms – two with double beds and the third with a bunk bed (double on the bottom bunk and single bunk on top). There is one shared bathroom upstairs and a cloakroom downstairs. The cottage can sleep seven at most, or six adults comfortably. Good linens and towels are provided.

The cottage has a good sized kitchen with hob, oven, large Fridge and freezer, and a utility room with washing machine and dryer. There is a large sitting room/dining room which seats six -seven. High chair, cot and various baby things available. The sitting room has two sofas and a TV with video, videos, a stereo with CD player, and fireplace. The cottage is nicely furnished with some charming French antiques as well as newer furniture. The cottage has oil-fired central heating (very effective!) and hot water. There is a front door as well as a side door with mud room and places for boots and coats.

There are numerous walks to take on the farm and in the area, and numerous places to visit nearby. Thirlestane Castle is just over the hill (5miles) in Lauder, and numerous other castles and stately homes are all within twenty minutes (Floors Castle in Kelso, Crichton Castle, Smailholm Tower, etc.) Kelso is about 15 miles away, and is a lively market town. Melrose is approx 12 miles away – it boasts a beautiful old Abbey, river walk with footbridge, and many stylish restaurants and highly regarded pubs, as well as gourmet shops and the like.

Harestanes is an excellent place for children from 1 – 10, it has an amazing outdoor play area with climbing frames and swings for dozens of children, a willow tunnel and house, a huge sandpit near an outdoor café which serves great healthy food for children and adults. This area also has craft shops and places to walk, and entry is free.

Innerleithen is nearby, which boasts Traquair Castle (which has events throughout the summer) and also great mountain bike paths along the Tweed River.
